The Dream 03:11
The sunset is sinking Down into the patio wall And you gently mocking say “Hey are you listening at all?” “Oh sorry I’m just drifting In space you know how I can be.” “Well Major Tom I’d just Love if you’d listen to me” And your face in that moment Brings up what’s still left of a dream It’s one I keep having But can’t understand what it means Oh a woman with your hair And your face leads me by the hand Up stairs to a room where The floors are all covered in sand Oh and she turns around And smiles at me Oh and she disappears In the midsummer heat You see me drifting And get mock indignant again “Did you come here to mope or Did you come here to talk to your friend?” “Oh sorry I’m just tired Is all, you know how that can be” “Well I should be going Take care and please get some sleep” Oh and you turn around And smile at me Oh and you disappear In the midsummer heat

You sat down in the corner booth And turned your eyes on me Painting the air Shooting the breeze You said “Oh god it’s been so long!” “Or at least it has for me.” Taking a sip I guess I agreed But truth be told you’re never far from me I dream of your smile In a mirror dimly But could I be the one To see you face to face? But when the evening’s emptied out And you fumble for your keys I don’t take the shot To say what I mean 'Cause truth be told you’re never far from me I dream of your smile In a mirror dimly But could I be the one To see you face to face?

On the cab ride back from the bar You put your head on your arm And stared out of the car At the night And the city shining so bright From Broadway to the stars in your eyes And somehow all the lights Followed you ‘Cause I gave my longing a name And it’s your name And I gave my longing a face And it’s your face So tell me what I’m missing When I look in your eyes So I walked you back to your door Up stairs to the second floor And wanted all the more Just to say I gave my longing a name And it’s your name And I gave my longing a face And it’s your face So tell me what I’m missing When I look in your eyes But every movie script ending Has turned out to be a fake So when the strings kicked in I felt my heart break ‘Cause I gave my longing a name And it’s your name And I gave my longing a face And it’s your face So tell me what I’m missing When I look in your eyes

It Isn't Me 02:43
And as the light declines At the dying of the day Something comes into view Then hides itself away And lying in the grass You must know that you’re a dream And I don’t know what you mean And as we part again The place we stand’s the same But when I look at you I can’t remember my own name And when you close your eyes Whose face is it you see? Well I know it isn’t me

I head out, down to the bar Out on 29th To a new scene, some empty dream That I’ll have tonight At the back of my mind Erasing the signs Tracing the lines Back to you In the dead air out on the patio Late last night You checked out and walked home alone Under dim streetlight To the back of my mind Erasing the signs Tracing the lines Back to you And the look as you walked away And the limits to what we can say The dead ends and prices we pay Til it’s gone either way I head out, down to the bar Out on 29th To a new scene, some empty dream That I’ll have tonight At the back of my mind Erasing the signs Tracing the lines Back to you

about

It’s the same thing
Every night
The light floating out
Of bar windows
The thin crowds
Half the town gone
For the summer

The air is blank-warm
And you can almost
See the ghosts
Wandering the
Midnight streets:

Everything you know of love
Is terror for you now
